THE GOOD NEWS

The connection between our food system and the climate crisis has been under the radar for most of us until now. In 2008, however, a number of initiatives are launching to put the food on our plate front-and-center in the climate change conversation. Among these initiatives include a focus on:

• Food Service Providers: Bon Appetit has launched its Low Carbon Diet Calculator to help individuals measure the impact of their food choices on global warming. Under the leadership of Helene York, and advisor to Take a Bite.

• College Students and College Campuses: Real Food Challenge is a national network of colleges promoting locally grown, sustainably raised and fair food on campuses across the country.

• Restaurants and Consumers: The Center for Food Safety launched its consumer campaign earlier this year to encourage consumers and restaurant owners to make climate-friendly food purchasing choices.

• Agribusiness Companies: Rainforest Action Network, along with other international organizations and small farmer advocacy groups around the world, have launched a campaign to focus on the key agribusiness companies that are the driving force behind much of the greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture, namely Archer Daniels Midland, Bunge, and Cargill.
